Legal basis and things to bear in mind
- The official procedure is 100 % free of charge; our cost covers handling it for you.
- Unless something else is expressly requested, the Registro Civil issues the certificate as an extract (art. 82.1 of Ley 20/2011). We request in writing whichever format you choose.
- The extract birth certificate does not attest to parentage (art. 29 of the Reglamento del Registro Civil): only to the event, the date, the place and the sex of the registered person. Proving who the parents are requires the literal format.
- If the certificate is going to another European Union country it does not need an apostilla: Regulation (EU) 2016/1191 abolished it on 16 February 2019 for birth, marriage and death. Outside the Union, if the country is party to the Hague Convention, we arrange the apostilla as a separate service.
- The Registro Civil's immediate delivery only reaches birth entries later than 1950. Earlier ones follow the ordinary route and take longer.
