Legal basis and things to bear in mind

  • Theft: a police report is COMPULSORY before the duplicate. Driving without your licence after an unreported theft can have consequences.
  • The temporary licence issued is valid for 3 months and allows you to drive within Spain.
  • The duplicate keeps the original expiry date.
  • If the reason is a change of address, this is NOT a duplicate: it is a change of address (use the specific procedure, which has no fee).
  • If the reason is a change of name/sex, a Registro Civil certificate showing the registered change is required.
