Legal basis and things to bear in mind

  • Both visits to the police station are compulsory and must be made in person: the fingerprinting and the collection of the card, which is only handed over to its holder. No digital service can replace them. We obtain both appointments for you and prepare everything so that the fingerprinting one only takes around 20 minutes of your time.
  • You can renew from TWO MONTHS before your TIE expires and up to THREE MONTHS afterwards, counted date to date (art. 30.4 of Ley 39/2015). They are not 60 and 90 days: in several months the 90th day falls AFTER the legal deadline. Filing within those windows extends the validity of your authorisation until the decision. Filing in the three months after expiry is a minor infringement (art. 52.b of LO 4/2000), fined up to 500 euros. Past those three months you can no longer renew: it becomes a serious infringement (art. 53.1.a), from 501 to 10,000 euros.
  • Your passport must still be valid: the new TIE cannot last longer than your passport. If your passport expires soon, renew it first so that the new card gets its full period of validity.
