Which documents do you need?

  • Informe de arraigo (settlement report) from the CCAA (autonomous region) or the Ayuntamiento (valid for 90 days). If it is not issued within 30 days, the application acknowledgement plus a social-integration report from a recognised organisation.
  • If relying on an employment contract: contract signed by the employer with binding offers, planned registration with the TGSS (Social Security General Treasury), the employer's IAE (economic-activities tax), and a certificate that the post is not covered by an employee already registered.
  • If relying on your own financial means: bank statements for the last 6 months, evidence of the source of the funds.
  • If relying on self-employment: business plan, IAE applied for, financial capacity for the investment, planned self-employed registration.
  • Proof of health cover (TSI health card, planned Seguridad Social (Social Security) registration or private health insurance).
  • Proof of payment of the tasa (official fee) Modelo 790-052 (12,76 €).

Legal basis and things to bear in mind

  • In force since 20 May 2025 with the new RD 1155/2024 (Spain's Immigration Regulation): the continuous residence period was reduced from 3 to 2 years. If you have >=3 years you may also consider arraigo laboral or socio-laboral (work-based or socio-labour settlement routes).
  • The informe de arraigo (settlement report) is the key document. Request it as soon as possible from your CCAA (autonomous region) or Ayuntamiento (some process it through social organisations such as Cáritas or Cruz Roja).
  • If your contract does not reach the SMI (national minimum wage) or is not full-time, consider combining several part-time jobs or switching to your own financial means.
  • Resolution deadline: 3 months, silencio NEGATIVO (no reply within the deadline = application denied). If the deadline passes with no reply, it opens the way to a recurso de alzada (administrative appeal to a higher body, 1 month) and contencioso-administrativo (judicial review, 2 months).
  • After the grant: 1 month to obtain the TIE (Foreigner Identity Card) at the police station with a prior appointment. Before your first day of work, registration with the TGSS (Social Security General Treasury) by your employer.
