Legal basis and things to bear in mind

  • The certificado de registro (the green certificate) proves your NIE and your right to reside in Spain for more than 3 months.
  • You have 3 months from your entry into Spain to apply for it.
  • It is not a physical card: it is a paper document showing your NIE.
  • After 5 years of continuous residence you will be able to obtain permanent residence.
  • If the certificate is for a minor, the applicant is the minor: their parent or guardian signs the application as legal representative. The duty to register has no age exemption.
  • Under the family-member-of-an-EU-citizen route the form carries TWO signatures: the applicant's legal representative and the EU citizen giving entitlement. If it is the same person, they sign both; otherwise both signatures are needed. A blank signature box ends in a request to remedy and a new appointment.
